How to splice a fluoride fiber
Please note that because they are softer than silica, fluoride glass optical fibers are not compatible with standard splicing devices.
How to splice a fluoride fiber with specialty cleaver device :
Prior to splicing, fluroride and germanate fibers need to be prepared specific way. Please refer to the pages :
Several companies provide high precision splicing devices compatible with soft glass.
For example :
- Splicing and tapering GPX3900 (Vytran)

Please note those filament based splicing devices enable to operate at low temperature.
It is thus possible to splice soft glass optical fibers such as : fluoride (ZBLAN, indium fluoride, AlF3 fluoride), germanate, chalcogenide… for single mode or multimode coupling, as well as endcapping purposes (see publication)
Please note germanate and AlF3 endcapping is commercially available.
It is also possible to splice silica to soft glass optical fibers (see publication here).
